Vermicomposting Integrated Into Organic Farming at Lion Farms in Florida

May 21, 2026 | Uncategorized

We are happy to see Lion Farms featured in a recent article by Florida Organic Growers (FOG) about sustainable organic agriculture in South Florida.

Even better, one of the photos shows something we recognize immediately – multiple modular Wormgear vermicomposting CFT systems doing real work on a real farm.

We are highlighting this customer because this is exactly what our systems are built for.

Turning Farm Waste Into a Working Input

Lion Farms is not bringing in compost from somewhere else and hoping for the best. They are using their own organic waste streams, plant material, crop residues, and farm byproducts, and converting them directly into vermicastings.

This gives them full control over the inputs, no issues with contamination.

It also gives them full control over the outputs.

The continuous flow through vermicomposting system from Wormgear allows, not just organic farms, to process material steadily without tearing the system apart every time it is harvested. The worms stay where they are comfortable. Microbiology stays active and finished castings can be harvested in a regular rhythm.

No reset button. No downtime.

Vermicastings as a Soil Conditioner, Not a Product on a Shelf

On farms like Lion Farms, vermicastings are not treated as a bagged product or a side hustle. They are a soil input, produced on site, and used where they matter.

Fresh vermicastings support:

  • Active microbial populations
  • Improved soil structure and aggregation
  • Better nutrient availability without spikes

Because the material going into the system comes from the farm itself, the output fits the farm. That connection often gets overlooked, but it makes a difference. It closes the loop, from farm waste to farm fertility.

CFT Systems Complement Organic Mushroom Cultivation

Every mushroom cultivation operation relies on a growing medium for their mushrooms. As the mushrooms get harvested regularly, the spent medium has to be replaced as well. The result is a predictable and continuous flow of waste material – or better put: a regular resource that often gets wasted.

Wormgear’s continuous flow through systems are the perfect addition because they also operate on a steady rhythm of feeding and harvesting.

The spent mushroom growing medium is used as a feedstock and the composting worms transform and upcycle it. The result is a soil amendment that is rich in nutrients and teeming with beneficial soil microorganisms.

Lion Farm is cultivating a range of culinary herbs, plants and aromatics in vermicompost-based soil systems. This is where the loop closes. The spent mushroom substrate becomes vermicompost which becomes food for the soil that grows new substrate.

Built for Long-Term Use

The Wormgear CFT system shown at Lion Farms has been operating since 2021 and is built to handle regular use in real farm conditions.

When a farm relies on vermicomposting as part of its operation, the equipment has to hold up and it has to work the same way every time. That’s what Wormgear is all about – we built Tools for Vermiculture.
